At a strategy briefing held in Tokyo on Thursday, Nintendo's President Satoru Iwata discussed a strategic turnaround of the company, particularly after the dismal sales of its flagship Wii U video game console.
Discussing Nintendo's strategy, Iwata said that the company will make no change in its policy which pivots around a combined hardware and software platform. Despite the disappointing sales of the Wii U console, Iwata said that Nintendo does not take a pessimistic view of the future of video game consoles.
Iwata also asserted that Nintendo has no plans to withdraw its hardware business; and added that game consoles will continue to be the center of the company's strategy for the future as it attempts to turnaround its fortunes.
Addressing the analysts at the strategy briefing, Iwata also said that even though it has, over the last few years, been widely advised to "go onto smartphones" in order to increase its business, Nintendo's approach is "not to put our games on smartphones."
However, Iwata hinted that Nintendo apparently has plans underway to foray into a new market - the 'health' market. Drawing attention to the fact that there is a wide range of 'wearable' devices on the market, Iwata said Nintendo plans to try out "non-wearables" to monitor people's health.
